The Expressway Authority of Thailand expects to seek Cabinet approval in December for the 3.98-kilometre Kathu–Patong route, estimated to cost 16.8 billion baht.
The project would offer an alternative to the steep and accident-prone road across the hills, cutting the current journey time from around 30 minutes to five.
Its centrepiece would be a 1.85-kilometre tunnel beneath Khao Nak Kerd. The route would also include elevated sections connecting Phra Metta Road in Patong with Phra Barami Road in Kathu.

Die lügen! Das ist Blödsinn. Da verkürzt die Strecke um drei Kurven und ein mal hoch fahren und insgesamt vielleicht 200 Meter. Schaut euch das auf der Karte an und dann auf dem Foto, das ist auch dort nur ein Hügel. Und dann gleich zwei Röhren? Das sind Spinner. Die Strecke bleibt bei 3,5 km. Also von 30 Minuten auf 5 Minuten, das ist Blödsinn. Von den 30 Minuten fährt man 5 Minuten hoch und 5 runter und diese 5 Minuten kann man vielleicht verkürzen.
